The analysis of the outcomes in the selected disorders reflects that herbal medicines are most efficacious for the treatment of URTI (Figure 5), followed by gynecological complaints (Figure 2) and psychosomatic disorders (Figure 1). Evidence for other herbal medicines in the treatment of acute bronchitis was scarce. Most studies included in this paper evaluated herbal medicines for the treatment of acute bronchitis or common cold and acute sinusitis or rhinosinusitis. However, it is not clear yet whether the integration of herbal medicines may allow to reduce or even to avoid the use of standard medical therapeutics in this case.
Herbal medicine has shown potential in managing chronic diseases such as diabetes, cancer, and neurodegenerative disorders. However, the lack of uniform global standards creates challenges in quality control and commercialization. One of the primary concerns with herbal medicine is the inconsistency in plant composition due to environmental factors, variations in processing methods, and potential contamination. Themes related to scientific validation (safety concerns), challenges, and future prospects of herbal medicine were identified. These interviews helped identify current challenges, emerging trends, and the future outlook for herbal medicine in healthcare systems. Additionally, preclinical studies assessing the pharmacokinetics and toxicity of herbal compounds were reviewed.

The clinical trials published so far point to the benefit of herbal medicines in reducing BPH symptoms. It is important to note in this context that one study discriminated between HM responders and non-responders (Kulchavenya — 2018). However, whether herbal medicines may reduce or even replace antibiotics in future guideline-based regimen requires more prospective studies conducted on large groups of participants , Wawrysiuk et al., 2022,. The use of herbal medicines has also been considered to be a good and safe alternative to perioperative antibiotic prophylaxis , Miotla et al., 2018,.
There’s limited research about the potential for interactions between phytotherapies and drugs. That damage can lead to major diseases, such as cancer and dementia. The intake of phytopharmaceuticals is becoming increasingly popular recently — but these herbal medicines are usually not suitable for use in acute and emergency medicine or as the sole treatment for serious illnesses. In most cases, an inhibitory effect was observed through additional treatment with curcumin, but the dose and the time of the curcumin administration were of great significance.
Though possibly influenced by Indian Ayurveda systems — the Indonesia archipelago holds numerous indigenous plants not found in India, including plants similar to those in Australia beyond the Wallace Line. In India, Ayurvedic medicine has quite complex formulas with 30 or more ingredients, including a sizable number of ingredients that have undergone “alchemical processing”, chosen to balance dosha. It relies on the false belief that preserving the complexity of substances from a given plant with less processing is safer and potentially more effective, for which there is no evidence either condition applies. Canadian regulations are described by the Natural and Non-prescription Health Products Directorate which requires an eight-digit Natural Product Number or Homeopathic Medicine Number on the label of licensed herbal medicines or dietary supplements. In the European Union (EU), herbal medicines are regulated under the Committee on Herbal Medicinal Products.
This speed is usually a significant fraction of the speed of light (as can be deduced from Maxwell’s equations), and is therefore many times faster than the drift velocity of the electrons. In a semiconductor it is sometimes useful to think of the current as due to the flow of positive “holes” (the mobile positive charge carriers that are places where the semiconductor crystal is missing a valence electron). The breakdown process forms a plasma that contains enough mobile electrons and positive ions to make it an electrical conductor. Regulations set by the government
The clinical efficacy of SJW, indicating a lesser effect compared to placebo, was investigated in a study conducted by Saito and colleagues , Saito et al., 2010,. Significant improvements in both physical , e.g., food cravings, and behavioral (e.g., confusion) symptoms were demonstrated in a clinical study on SJW’s efficacy for mild PMS compared to placebo (Canning et al., 2010). An overview of the results and characteristics of the study can be found in Supplementary Table S2. For menopausal symptoms, the phytopharmaceuticals evaluated included Cimicifuga racemosa (L.) (Black cohosh) across 10 studies and Salvia officinalis (Sage) from 1 study, while Vitex agnus-castus L (VAC, Chaste tree) (8 studies) and SJW (1 study) were used for PMS treatment. Although the same research group conducted four out of the six studies, the designs of those studies varied.
Herbal medicines are indeed quite popular and well-received by patients due to their safety profile, as they typically do not produce severe side effects. Nevertheless, the evidence supporting the efficacy of herbal medicines remains insufficient for their integration into conventional medicine guidelines and standard treatment protocols, which is why many statutory health insurances do not cover the expenses. This analysis of the current research regarding the clinical advantages of herbal medicines for non-life-threatening conditions has certain limitations. Gastrointestinal diseases are uniquely positioned as only the added value of phytodrugs in conjunction with conventional therapies was examined. In the case of urological diseases, specifically UTIs and LUTS (Figure 4), we could only identify 16 studies based on our rigorous inclusion/exclusion criteria; thus, additional high-quality studies are necessary to better understand the efficacy of herbal drugs for these conditions.
